Drive in Malaysia's Independent Review Board (IRB)

When your academic research involves humans or animals, you need to be careful in handling such sample because rights and welfare of participating research subjects should be adequately protected.

Institutional/Independent Review Boards (IRBs) or Research Ethics Committees (RECs) are responsible to provide a core protection for human research participants through advance and periodic independent review of the ethical standards followed by researchers, whereas research involving animals must be reviewed by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) before it begins. Usually, IRBs function under the auspices of universities and research institutions. Authors should submit their research methodology, sample information, and sampling plan to IRBs so that they may review whether you endeavor to follow standard ethics protocols set by international/local research ethics bodies.

IRB determines whether risks to subjects are minimal in relation to the significance of the knowledge the study is expected to present; that the process of subject selection is fair and explain inclusion and exclusion criteria; that the privacy of subjects is maintained; concerns of participants are significantly dealt; graphic, written or recorded information about individuals, when this information has been collected by researchers, involved in a study conducted by others; and that authors plan to obtain informed consent from study subjects.

Sometimes individual researchers face difficulties while submitting their research to academic journals because the editorial offices direct researchers to submit an IRB approval letter but their organizations don’t have IRBs. In such cases, researchers should contact Independent Review Boards (IRBs) or Independent Research Ethics Committees (IRECs) such as offered by “Drive in Malaysia”. We provide research ethics review services to the individuals conducting research within the domains of business, management sciences, and behavioural sciences.

Drive in Malaysia’s Independent Review Board (IRB)/Independent Research Ethics Committee (IREC) comprises of five (5) members:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anas Tajudin (Deputy Vice Chancellor - Academic & International), Universiti Islam Melaka, Malaysia.

Dr. Hafiz Abbas, Communication University of China, Beijing, China.

Dr. Hafiz Muddasir Rahman, Ulster University, UK.
